Introduction: Barbell hip thrust (BHT) is an exercise that focuses on improving lower body performance. Studies have shown that this exercise enormously increases activation of muscular movement of the hip extensors particular on horizontal and vertical placement of movement.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the concept of using barbell hip thrust (BHT) as one tool of exercise to improve sports performance. Methods: Few primary databases have been used, such as Scopus and Web of Science (WOS) to do a literature review regarding BHT. Keyword “hip thrust” OR “glute bridge” has been used as the primary searching for this topic. Numerous studies have been a focus on lower body exercise such as a back squat, front squat, deadlift etc. However, barbell hip thrust is still a new type of exercise approach that can be explored into the current sport setting typically, in strength and conditioning. Result: Studies has shown that BHT is more activated at gluteus maximus, biceps femoris and adductor magnus as the primary hip extensors. Meanwhile, the secondary hip extensors involve muscles such as gluteus medius, gluteus minimus, erector spinae, rectus femoris and vasti muscles. Conclusion: Based on the observation, the finding of this study showed that BHT provides benefit for athletes that involve in vertical or horizontal placement with horizontal more prominent to improve.
